Michael R. McCarty, a native New Yorker, knew in his early teens that he was going to be in the restaurant and saloon business. He opened his first successful place on the Upper East Side of New York when he was twenty-three years old and has been going strong ever since.
Michael owned and/or operated many New York restaurants and hot spots, among them Swells, The Sugar Mill, and Little Club, from the mid 70’s through the early 90’s when he went to work for the Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group helping them with their national expansion effort. In 2001, Michael left Smith & Wollensky’s with the idea of again opening another place of his own. He decided on Palm Beach.
Michael first visited friends on Palm Beach in 1973 and completely fell in love with this tropical fun-filled island. He knew then and there that Palm Beach was where he eventually wanted to end up. He has been back every year since and has lived here on and off for over forty years. On one of his visits in 2002, he decided to buy the local watering hole Dempsey’s, and after a total renovation and make over, he opened Michael R. McCarty’s. With its British Colonial décor, outdoor terrace, and private club room “Rory’s,” it has become an island institution, the place to “see and be seen.” “You will always run into someone you know at McCarty’s,” says McCarty. Additionally, says McCarty, “It seems to be a required stop from the airport on your way in and out of Palm Beach. It’s how you find out what’s happening and who is and is not around.”
World renowned for its traditional freshly home-cooked fare, friendly staff, and familiar crowd, McCarty’s serves everything from lovely light soufflés at lunch to marvelous fresh seafood and chops at night. McCarty’s is open for lunch and dinner daily. Michael R. McCarty’s is truly your home away from home.
